Zambia's wildlife coin program of the 2010s was partly a response to the collapse of the country's earlier commemorative market, which had flooded collector channels with low-quality issues through the 1990s. The hippo series was a deliberate repositioning — thicker strikes, bimetallic and plated compositions, larger formats — aimed at European and Asian retail buyers rather than domestic circulation. Nordic gold-plated stainless steel was chosen specifically because it photographs well in promotional material while keeping production costs low enough for volume sales through third-party distributors.
