Additional information

Issued to mark the 1700th anniversary of Diocletian's palace complex at Split — the Roman emperor having retired there around 305 AD — this gold piece was part of Croatia's early commemorative program during a period when the young republic was barely four years into independence and still engaged in the broader Yugoslav wars. The kuna itself had only been reintroduced in 1994, replacing the Croatian dinar after a single turbulent year of use.
