Additional information

Savang Vatthana was crowned in 1959 but this commemorative was struck more than a decade later — an awkward gap that reflects the near-constant instability of the Royal Lao Government throughout the 1960s. He would prove to be Laos's last king, abdicating in 1975 following the Pathet Lao takeover. Reportedly placed under house arrest and later sent to a "seminar camp," he died in captivity sometime around 1978, the exact circumstances never formally acknowledged by the Lao PDR.

Struck for the collector market rather than circulation, the issue saw limited domestic distribution.
