1000 Guilders 43rd CISM General Assembly

The CISM — Conseil International du Sport Militaire — held its 43rd General Assembly in Suriname in 1988, an unlikely host given the country was then under the effective control of Dési Bouterse following the 1980 military coup and the brutal December Murders of 1982, in which fifteen prominent civilians were executed at Fort Zeelandia. That Suriname secured the assembly at all reflected deliberate outreach by the military government to gain international legitimacy through sporting diplomacy.
