The 2002 issue marks the semicentennial of the Banco Central del Paraguay, founded in 1952 to replace the earlier Banco del Paraguay as the country's sole note-issuing authority. Oberthur Fiduciaire, the Rennes-based security printer with a long history of Latin American contracts, handled production — their work on Paraguayan issues from this period is generally reliable in registration though the watermark security on this commemorative is relatively modest by contemporary standards.
Cotton substrate was standard for the series; no polymer variant was issued for this denomination at this date.
