The Institut d'Émission d'Outre-Mer was established in 1966 to manage currency for France's remaining overseas territories after the Caisse Centrale de la France d'Outre-Mer was restructured. This 1000 Francs note is the earlier emission — without the 'RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE' overprint that was added to subsequent printings to assert the constitutional relationship between the territories and metropolitan France. The distinction matters to collectors: the overprinted version is considerably more common, making the clean examples of this type the harder find.
