The Bank of Central African States — the BEAC — serves six member nations simultaneously, which creates the recurring diplomatic headache of whose imagery takes precedence on commemorative issues. The Unicorn series sidesteps that problem entirely by using mythology. This particular issue incorporates a synthetic opal insert, a technique that became fashionable among European minting houses around 2015 and has since been licensed aggressively to issuing authorities with limited domestic minting infrastructure — BEAC strikes nothing itself, contracting production almost certainly to a European facility.
KM#191 is the fourth in the sequence. Collector demand for the series has been driven almost entirely by the insert novelty rather than numismatic fundamentals.
