The type 1862 succursales series was distinguished by its branch office indexing system — black printed letter codes identifying which of the Banque de France's provincial branches (succursales) was responsible for the note. This was a practical administrative measure in an era when branch accountability and inter-office reconciliation were handled by physical document trails rather than centralized ledgers.

Jacques-Jean Barre, who engraved the obverse, was one of the foremost medallists and engravers of mid-19th century France, serving simultaneously as Graveur général des monnaies. His involvement here signals the seriousness with which the Banque treated this denomination. Charles Maurand, responsible for the reverse, was primarily known as a wood engraver — an unusual choice for banknote work of this register.
