Obverse description The obverse displays the Belgian royal coat of arms — a shield bearing the rampant lion of Belgium — surmounted by a royal crown and flanked on either side by symmetrical olive branches tied at the base with a ribbon. The denomination '1000 FRS.' is inscribed in the upper field above the crowned shield. The word 'ESSAI' (trial) appears in small letters to the left of the shield. The date '1949' is struck in the lower exergue beneath the wreath. The overall composition is rendered in high relief with a proof-like finish characteristic of an official pattern strike.
