| Additional information |
Chad's 1970 gold issue commemorated the tenth anniversary of independence from France, achieved on August 11, 1960, when François Tombalbaye's government assumed full sovereignty. The series was produced in limited quantities by the Paris Mint, as were virtually all Chadian coinage issues of the period — the country had no domestic minting infrastructure and relied entirely on French facilities for its numismatic output.
Tombalbaye was assassinated in a military coup in April 1975, making coins bearing imagery from his tenure historical documents of a government that ended violently.
