Additional information

Guinea's central bank has issued a long-running series of small-format gold pieces nominally denominated in francs guinéens but produced entirely for the collector market — none circulate. Paul VI, who died in 1978, was the pope who navigated the close of the Second Vatican Council and faced the firestorm over Humanae Vitae in 1968. His beatification came in 2014, his canonization in 2018, making this 2017 issue a deliberate placement in the lead-up to that formal declaration by Pope Francis.
