Guinea's micro-gold issues of this type were produced for the collector and gift market rather than any monetary function — the republic has not circulated gold coinage in any practical sense. Pope Leo XIII, who died in 1903 at age 93, held the papacy for 25 years and is best remembered for the 1891 encyclical Rerum Novarum, which laid the groundwork for modern Catholic social teaching on labor and capital.
