The Caisse Centrale de la France Libre was established by de Gaulle's Free French government-in-exile in 1941 to give the movement a functioning monetary authority — issuing currency was as much a political act as a financial one, a direct challenge to Vichy's claim to legitimacy. Bradbury Wilkinson produced the notes in Britain, and Edmund Dulac, the Franco-British illustrator already well known for his work on British postage stamps, was brought in as designer.
Pick 16A is the higher-denomination variant of the series and was primarily intended for use in Free French territories rather than metropolitan France. Relatively few entered active circulation before the series was superseded by later CCFL issues.
