Ruthenium plating on numismatic silver became a commercially viable technique only in the early 2010s, and Burkina Faso's state mint partner — the Bavarian State Mint in Munich — was among the first to exploit the process for African-market collector issues. The black metallic finish is achieved through physical vapor deposition, producing a surface that resists oxidation far more effectively than raw silver but scratches irreversibly under even light contact.
Burkina Faso's CFA franc issues of this period were struck under licensing arrangements with the Banque Centrale des États de l'Afrique de l'Ouest, though the coins were never intended for circulation.
