| Obverse description | The Togolese national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting two rampant lions facing inward and supporting a shield bearing the initials 'RT' (République Togolaise) within a hexagonal frame, above which two national flags are displayed crossed, each charged with a single star. Scrolled ribbon banners inscribed TRAVAIL, LIBERTÉ, and PATRIE flank and surmount the central device. The legend REPUBLIQUE TOGOLAISE arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 1000 FRANCS appears in large raised letters along the lower rim. Togo issued a wave of commemorative silver pieces in the late 1990s through licensing arrangements common among smaller Francophone African states — the coins were designed, struck, and distributed almost entirely outside the country, typically by European minting houses targeting the collector market. Virtually none circulated in Togo itself.
The Sydney Games didn't open until September 2000, making this a pre-issue struck a full year ahead of the event — standard practice for Olympic licensing programs of the period, which prioritized retail shelf time over commemorative precision.
