Kaiser Ferdinand's Nordbahn, inaugurated in 1837 between Vienna and Deutsch-Wagram, was Austria's first steam-operated public railway — a venture backed by the Rothschild banking house after the state declined to fund it directly. Benin's commemorative program has long issued coins themed around global transportation history, a series directed almost entirely at the collector market with no meaningful circulation.
KM#81 is one of several dozen such issues Benin released through European distributors in the mid-2000s, a period when the country's mint authority became a favored vehicle for third-party commemorative producers.
