Additional information

Piliocolobus kirkii — Kirk's red colobus — is endemic to Zanzibar and listed as Endangered, its population confined almost entirely to the Jozani forest. Benin has no geographic or political connection to this species whatsoever. The coin exists because of a well-documented cottage industry: Central African CFA member states, and particularly Benin, have since the early 2000s issued large volumes of collector coinage featuring foreign wildlife, ancient civilizations, and pop culture figures — none of it intended for circulation, all of it sold wholesale to European distributors.
