The BCEAO's commemorative silver program, struck at the Monnaie de Paris, exists largely outside everyday West African commerce — these pieces are produced for the collector market and rarely if ever reach the eight member states whose shared currency they nominally represent. The franc CFA itself has been pegged to the French franc, and subsequently the euro, since 1948, a monetary arrangement that has generated sustained political controversy across francophone Africa for decades.
