Obverse description Central device depicts a seated allegorical female figure, draped and wearing a turban, facing slightly right, holding upright stone tablets inscribed with the national motto UNITE / TRAVAIL / PROGRES. The legend REPUBLIQUE DU CONGO curves along the upper periphery, while the denomination 1000 FRANCS is inscribed along the lower periphery. The field is mirror-polished in proof finish, providing strong contrast against the frosted relief of the central design.

Reverse description The reverse features a full-length portrait of Captain James Cook standing to the left in 18th-century naval attire, holding a navigational sextant to his eye. Behind him, occupying the right and centre of the field, is a detailed rendering of the full-rigged bark HMS Endeavour under sail upon stylised waves. The legend JAMES COOK .
