| Obverse description | A seated female figure, draped and facing three-quarters right, holds upright a stone tablet inscribed with the national motto UNITE / TRAVAIL / PROGRES in the central field. The legend REPUBLIQUE DU CONGO arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 1000 FRANCS is inscribed along the lower periphery. The *Herzogin Cecilie* was a four-masted barque launched in 1902 for the German Flying P-Line, and one of the most celebrated sail-training ships of the early twentieth century. She ran aground off Bolt Head, Devon, in April 1936 — a wreck widely photographed and mourned across Europe. The Republic of the Congo's 1993 commemorative program issued a series of silver pieces honoring historic sailing vessels, part of a broader wave of African nation numismatic licensing that had little to do with the issuing country and everything to do with collector markets in Europe and North America.
