| Obverse description | A seated female figure, draped and facing three-quarters right, holds upright a stone tablet inscribed with the national motto UNITE / TRAVAIL / PROGRES in the central field. The legend REPUBLIQUE DU CONGO arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 1000 FRANCS is inscribed along the lower periphery. The composition reflects an allegorical treatment characteristic of Francophone African commemorative coinage. |

The *Herzogin Cecilie* was a four-masted barque launched in 1902 for the German Flying P-Line, and one of the most celebrated sail-training ships of the early twentieth century. She ran aground off Bolt Head, Devon, in April 1936 — a wreck widely photographed and mourned across Europe. The Republic of the Congo's 1993 commemorative program issued a series of silver pieces honoring historic sailing vessels, part of a broader wave of African nation numismatic licensing that had little to do with the issuing country and everything to do with collector markets in Europe and North America.
