Obverse description Central field displays the coat of arms of Benin, featuring a quartered shield supported by two leopards rampant, the shield surmounted by a star and flanked by a palm tree and a sailing vessel in the lower quarters, with a scroll below bearing the national motto FRATERNITE JUSTICE TRAVAIL. The legend REPUBLIQUE DU BENIN arcs along the upper periphery in Latin characters, while the denomination 1000 FRANCS CFA is inscribed in large relief across the lower field.

Reverse description The reverse presents a three-quarter facing bust of the German playwright and philosopher Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729–1781), depicted in 18th-century attire with a powdered wig, lace jabot, and a buttoned coat, rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished field. To the upper left, an ornate cartouche bears the dates 1729 and 1781. The name GOTTHOLD EPHRAIM LESSING curves along the upper legend in bold Latin lettering, and the issue year 2004 appears in the right field.
