Additional information

The Republic of the Congo — not to be confused with the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo — has issued wildlife-themed silver pieces through licensing arrangements with the European Coin Program and similar intermediaries, meaning these coins are produced largely for the collector market and were never intended to circulate in Brazzaville. The 2005 gorilla issue falls squarely in that category: a legal tender instrument in name only, struck to attract foreign hobbyist currency rather than facilitate domestic commerce.
