| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of Benin occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield supported by two leopards rampant. The shield features a castle and a star of Benin in the upper quarters, and a palm tree and a sailing ship in the lower quarters, surmounted by a buffalo head. A scroll beneath bears the national motto in the legend: FRATERNITE JUSTICE TRAVAIL. The country name REPUBLIQUE DU BENIN arcs along the upper periphery in Latin script, while the denomination 1000 FRANCS CFA appears in large characters at the bottom of the field. |

Benin issues coins through the Banque Centrale des États de l'Afrique de l'Ouest but has no independent mint — production is contracted to private minting houses in Europe, overwhelmingly for collector markets rather than circulation. The "Frog Prince" belongs to a wave of novelty bullion and themed issues that BCEAO member states began licensing aggressively in the 2000s, generating hard currency revenue while the coins themselves never approach West African soil.
