Reverse description A highly detailed depiction of the Russian three-masted tall ship Khersones (Chersones) under full sail occupies the entire field, shown sailing to the right over stylized rolling waves. All sails are billowed and rigging is rendered with fine engraving detail. Scattered clouds appear in the upper field to the left and right of the vessel. The ship's name 'CHERSONES' is inscribed in a curved legend along the upper periphery, and the date '2006' appears in the lower right field.

Additional information

The "Chersones" in this coin's name refers to the Tauric Chersonese, the ancient Greek colonial settlement on the Crimean Peninsula — an odd subject for a West African issuer. Togo, like several other CFA franc states, licensed its coining authority during the 2000s to European bullion and novelty coin producers, resulting in a wave of thematic silver issues bearing Togolese legal-tender status but with no meaningful connection to Togolese history or economy. KM#110 is one such piece.
