The Atlas Maior title references Joan Blaeu's 1662 monumental atlas — at the time of publication, the largest book ever printed, running to eleven volumes and roughly 600 maps. BEAC has issued numismatic silver in small runs aimed squarely at the European collector market, a practice that generates hard currency for member states while bearing little relation to the monetary systems those states actually use.
