Additional information

The Republic of the Congo — not to be confused with the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo — issued a wave of commemorative silver in the late 1990s almost entirely for the collector export market. These pieces had no meaningful domestic circulation; the CFA franc zone's everyday coinage came through the BEAC, and the Congo's own commemorative program existed largely to generate foreign exchange through coin dealers and telemarketing operations targeting collectors abroad.

The Sydney 2000 games were a common subject across dozens of small nations running similar programs simultaneously, making this issue one of hundreds of broadly equivalent pieces from the same window.
