| Additional information |
Equatorial Guinea has no Olympic tradition to speak of — the country first sent athletes to the Games in 1984 and has never won a medal. The 1998 issue sits in a long line of CFA-denominated commemoratives produced by the country almost entirely for the collector market, with no meaningful circulation intended or achieved. Equatorial Guinea adopted the CFA franc zone in 1985 after switching from the ekwele, a currency introduced post-independence that proved economically ruinous.
