Obverse description The Portuguese coat of arms — the traditional quinas shield bearing five escutcheons each charged with five bezants in saltire, bordered by seven castles — is depicted centrally, superimposed on two interlocking circular forms evoking a globe or armillary sphere motif. The legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA arcs along the upper left periphery, while the denomination 1000 ESC appears in large numerals in the lower field. The engraver's name NOGUEIRA DA SILVA and the mint mark INCM are inscribed in small lettering at the lower right of the field.
