| Obverse description | Central field features a stylized Cross of the Order of Christ composed of geometric linear elements, superimposed upon the Portuguese coat of arms displaying the five escutcheons with bezants in cruciform arrangement. The word ENSAIO (meaning 'pattern' or 'essay') appears within the central device. Four five-pointed stars are positioned around the central emblem in the field. The mint name INCM and engraver's signature J.J.BRITO appear in small lettering at the lower left and lower right of the field respectively.
