At independence in June 1975, Mozambique inherited a stock of Banco Nacional Ultramarino notes — Portuguese colonial currency still in circulation. Rather than immediately commission entirely new designs, the incoming Banco de Moçambique applied overprints to existing BNU stock, effectively nationalizing the paper supply overnight. This 1000 Escudos is a product of that transitional scramble.

Thomas De La Rue handled the overprinting, working from the same colonial sheets. The print run of over twelve million is substantial for a transitional issue, suggesting the overprint was intended as genuine circulating currency rather than a stopgap — the new metical wouldn't arrive until 1980.
