Obverse description Dark green and purple on multicolour underprint. An intaglio oval portrait vignette of the Conde de Castelo Melhor occupies the left field, with a finely engraved rendering of the National Palace of Sintra at centre; the Portuguese coat of arms appears at top centre and the bank arms at lower right. Intricate guilloche latticework frames the composition, with the plate designation Chapa 5 noted.

The bank name appears on a scrollwork banner at top, with the denomination numeral set within an ornate panel at bottom centre.
