Issued to mark Brunei's independence from Britain on January 1, 1984, after nearly a century as a British protectorate. The sultanate had resisted full independence for years — partly due to the failed 1962 rebellion led by A.M. Azahari, which prompted the Sultan to indefinitely suspend elections and rule by decree, a political posture that shaped the cautious, delayed path to sovereignty.
At 50 grams of .917 gold, this was a prestige issue from the outset, not a circulation piece. Mintages for Bruneian gold commemoratives of this period were tightly controlled and remain difficult to verify from official records.
