Struck to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's coronation, this issue appeared at a moment when Brunei's petroleum revenues had made its ruler reputably the wealthiest head of state on earth. The Royal Mint in London produced the piece under contract — Brunei has never operated its own mint facility.
The 50-gram .917 gold specification places it among the heavier commemorative strikes of the region, minted in very limited quantities and almost certainly never circulated.
