Issued to mark the tenth anniversary of Brunei's independence from Britain in 1984, this gold piece commemorates one of the quietest decolonizations of the late twentieth century — a negotiated transition that left the Sultan's absolute authority entirely intact. Brunei had been a British protectorate since 1888, and when independence finally came, it arrived largely on Hassanal Bolkiah's own terms.
At 62.20 grams of .999 gold, the face value is purely nominal against bullion content alone — a deliberate statement about a state sitting atop one of Southeast Asia's most productive oil and gas reserves.
