Issued to mark the tenth anniversary of Brunei's independence from Britain in 1984, this gold piece commemorates one of the quietest decolonizations of the late twentieth century — a negotiated transition that left the Sultan's absolute authority entirely intact. Brunei had been a British protectorate since 1888, and when independence finally came, it arrived largely on Hassanal Bolkiah's own terms.
