Australia's platinum Koala series launched in 1987, making Perth one of the earliest sovereign mints to issue a dedicated platinum bullion program in direct competition with the Canadian Maple Leaf and the American Platinum Eagle, which didn't arrive until 1997. The one-kilogram denomination occupied the extreme top of the range, produced in strictly limited quantities each year and sold primarily to institutional investors and high-net-worth collectors in Asian markets, particularly Japan, where Perth actively cultivated distribution partnerships through the late 1980s and 1990s.
The koala design changes annually — a deliberate marketing decision to drive year-on-year collector demand rather than issuing a static design.
