The circular legend REPÚBLICA DEMOCRÁTICA DE S. TOMÉ E PRÍNCIPE arcs around the upper periphery in Latin characters, while the denomination 1000 DOBRAS is inscribed in the upper field beneath the legend. The design is rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished field consistent with proof striking.
