São Tomé and Príncipe issued a wave of Olympic-themed commemoratives in the early 1990s well ahead of the Atlanta Games — standard practice for small island nations whose mints produced coins primarily for the collector market rather than domestic circulation. Few of these pieces ever reached São Tomé, and fewer still were spent there.
