Yugoslavia issued this coin in the immediate aftermath of Josip Broz Tito's death on May 4, 1980, a moment that set the federation's long unraveling formally in motion. Tito had ruled since 1945 by sheer force of personal authority, and the 1974 constitution he drafted had already anticipated his absence — replacing the presidency with a rotating collective of eight regional representatives, one per republic and autonomous province. That arrangement was meant to hold Yugoslavia together. It lasted just over a decade.
