Yugoslavia issued this coin following Josip Broz Tito's death on May 4, 1980, after nearly four decades of one-party rule. His passing triggered immediate constitutional anxiety — the 1974 constitution had already anticipated the problem by establishing a rotating eight-member presidency to prevent any single successor from consolidating his authority.
The .925 silver version, catalogued separately from its base-metal counterpart, was struck for the collector market rather than circulation. Within a decade of issue, the federation Tito had held together by force of personality began its violent dissolution.
