Obverse description The obverse features the national coat of arms of the Republic of The Gambia centered in the field, depicting a shield charged with two crossed axes, supported by two rampant lions, and surmounted by a helmeted crest with a pelican and palm fronds above. A scroll at the base of the arms bears the national motto in three segments: PROGRESS, PEACE, and PROSPERITY. The legend REPUBLIC OF THE GAMBIA arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin lettering, while the date 1996 appears prominently in the lower field beneath the arms.
