Obverse description Central square hole flanked by four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu), arranged in the traditional cross-reading format: read top to bottom and right to left. The inscription 咸豐元寶 (Xianfeng Yuanbao) occupies the four cardinal positions around the hole, with 咸 at top, 元 at right, 寶 at bottom, and 豐 at left. The characters are boldly cast in high relief within a plain, unadorned field. The coin's broad, flat flan is typical of the large-denomination cast brass issues of the Xianfeng reign (1851–1861).
