Obverse description Four large Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform reading order around a central square hole: top to bottom on the vertical axis and right to left on the horizontal axis, reading 咸豐元寶 (Xianfeng Yuanbao). The boldly cast characters dominate the broad, flat field, which is bordered by a plain raised rim. The style is characteristic of the large-denomination cast cash of the Xianfeng reign, with robust strokes and generous spacing between the legends and the central perforation.
