Obverse description Large cast flan displaying four bold Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu), arranged in cruciform reading order around a central square hole: 咸 (xian) above, 豐 (feng) below, 元 (yuan) to the right, and 寶 (bao) to the left, together forming the reign title and currency legend 咸豐元寶. The characters are deeply incuse-raised against a plain field, with strongly modelled brushstroke forms characteristic of Qing dynasty large-denomination cash coinage. A plain raised rim borders the coin on its outer edge and the inner square aperture.
