Additional information

Equatorial Guinea's 1980 commemorative program marking the visit of Spanish royalty was itself a politically charged exercise — the country had only recently emerged from the brutal dictatorship of Francisco Macías Nguema, overthrown in 1979 by his nephew Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. Restoring ties with Spain, the former colonial power, was an early diplomatic priority of the new regime. Trial strikes like this one were produced to test dies and planchet specifications before authorizing a final issue, and many never progressed further.

The ambiguous cross-reference — X#1 or X#5 — reflects genuine catalog uncertainty that has not been resolved, likely due to the extreme rarity of surviving examples.
