Jujuy's provincial emergency notes of 1989 were a direct consequence of Argentina's hyperinflationary collapse under the austral — by mid-year, inflation was running at several thousand percent annually, and the federal government was effectively unable to supply provinces with circulating currency. Jujuy, one of the poorest provinces in the northwest, issued these quasi-moneda notes as salary instruments, redeemable locally but not guaranteed by the Banco Central.
The austral itself would be abolished in 1992, replaced by the peso convertible at 10,000 to 1. A provincial note denominated in a currency that ceased to exist within three years of issue.
