The P#53 series was introduced under the republic proclaimed by Daoud Khan following the July 1973 coup that ended Afghan monarchy. Da Afghanistan Bank continued to rely on Thomas De La Rue for high-denomination production throughout this period — a dependency that reflected both the quality demands for a 1000 Afghani note and the absence of a domestic security printing facility capable of handling them.
The watermark remains the sole mechanical security feature, which was not unusual for De La Rue output destined for developing-economy central banks at this time, but does make authentication of higher-grade survivors straightforward.
