Da Afghanistan Bank's relationship with Thomas De La Rue stretched across multiple series during the 1960s, and this 1000 Afghani note sits near the top of the denomination range issued under King Mohammed Zahir Shah's reign — a period of relative political stability that ended abruptly with the 1973 coup. The watermark is the sole mechanical security feature, which was not unusual for De La Rue's work in this region at the time but left the series vulnerable to counterfeiting as printing technology became more accessible.

Pick 46 is the scarcer of the 1967 high-denomination printings in consistently sound condition, as heavy use in commercial transactions took a predictable toll on the paper.
