Trial strikes from Mennica Polska in this period were produced as internal approval pieces, submitted to the issuing authority before the final production run was authorized. The 1980 Moscow Olympics generated an enormous wave of commemorative coinage across the Eastern Bloc, and Poland was no exception — the zloty series for these games ran across multiple metals and denominations. This nickel trial exists because the approved circulation and collector versions were struck in different alloys; the proof and business strike authorized versions used silver and cupro-nickel respectively, making nickel trials like this a documented but seldom-encountered artifact of the approval process.
