Korfanty organized and led the Third Silesian Uprising of 1921 — a paramilitary campaign launched after the League of Nations plebiscite awarded a disproportionate share of industrial Upper Silesia to Germany despite the region's mixed population. His volunteer forces held the Annaberg heights against Freikorps units long enough to shift the eventual boundary commission decision in Poland's favor. The Polish government later rewarded him by arresting him in 1930 on Piłsudski's orders; he died in 1939, weeks after release from Cartier-Bresson prison, cause of death still disputed.
