The circular legend is interrupted by the denomination word STO (one hundred) above and ZŁOTYCH below the eagle, flanking the design vertically. The issuer legend POLSKA RZECZPOSPOLITA LUDOWA (Polish People's Republic) runs along the left and right periphery, with the date 1974 and the MW mint mark appearing in the lower segment between two raised dots. Additional information

Poland's commemorative coin program expanded significantly in the early 1970s under the Polish People's Republic, with the Mennica Polska producing trial strikes — próby — as formal submissions for approval before authorizing full production runs. This piece is one such proba, struck in a lower-silver alloy than the eventual circulation issue. The distinction between the .625 proof trial and the standard issue matters considerably to type collectors, as the próby were produced in strictly limited quantities and distributed primarily through state export channels, not domestic commerce.

Skłodowska-Curie was a recurring subject for Polish commemorative coinage — her French scientific fame notwithstanding, Warsaw claimed her emphatically as its own.
